Let’s talk about winter boots, shall we?

Winter is here folks.  Although we’ve already had quite the cold spell over the last few weeks, there are still quite a few of us procrastinating on getting everything we need to take on the season.  Our feet are one thing we always want to take care of, especially in these conditions we’ve seen throughout the country this year. So let’s kick off this Winter Boots Review and figure out what kind is right for you?

4 Quick Tips When Buying Winter Boots

  1. Try them on with the socks you want to wear with your new boots, as this can affect the fit. If you try your boots on with thicker socks, but usually wear thinner socks, you might find your boots feel a little too loose.
  2. If you’re trying on winter boots before buying them, arrange this for the afternoon if possible. This is when your feet are likely to be at their largest, as they swell over the course of the day, meaning you’ll be able to get the right size.
  3. Make sure you try on both boots – it’s normal for feet to be slightly different in size, so you want to be sure they’re comfortable on both feet.
  4. Take a walk around the shop (or your living room if trying on at home) to make sure your boots are easy to move around in.

Why Do I Need Winter Footwear?

There are three things you’ll want in your winter footwear — Insulation, Waterproofness, and Traction.  Let’s be honest, no one likes cold feet. We want to keep feet warm in those winter conditions. We all enjoy comfort and that’s exactly what a proper winter boot is going to offer you. There are different factors to consider when choosing the best winter footwear, from how much you typically walk, to which are the warmest and offer protection while still being suitable for work.  You’ll also want to consider the grip and traction that you may require from the soles of your winter footwear. Keep in mind that if you’re just looking for everyday winter boots, there are other ways to add extra traction when the time calls for it, such as microspikes.  I also want to mention again to remember to bring a pair of socks that you would normally wear with them, because not all retail stores will have loaner socks.  The taller the boot, the more of your leg that gets to reap the temperature regulating benefits of the boot. If you will be trudging through the deeper snow, look for high tops or boots with an adjustable collar that you can pull tight around your leg.

Top Winter Boot Brands

Well, I guess this one comes down to the individual, because let’s face it.. we are all different.  Someone may find that their Oboz has too high of an arch, while another person finds it perfect.  Or maybe the Solomon may be too narrow for someone, but the wide toe box in a Keen may be just what they were looking for.  We all have different preferences in our footwear and that is totally ok.  But… for the sake of this article, here is what REI believes are the best winter boot brands of 2020.

Oboz

Keen

Sorel

Merrell

Columbia

Danner Mountain

La Sportiva
